Top mistakes young students make while choosing a career for themselves:

1. Not taking enough time:

For taking the best decision, you need a fairly good amount of time, but not taking enough time to decide one of the most important thing in your life is the worst mistake one can make while choosing a career.  Career is something that will get on with you throughout your life, so it needs to be chosen wisely. So, the process of choosing a wonderful career should start with identifying your areas of interests, therefore it is necessary to assess your own personality traits ie your skills and interests, your likes and dislikes, your strengths and weaknesses. Do your swot analysis. When you match this, you will be able to get closer to your career goal.

2. Choosing career that is easy:

Another popular common mistake that young people make these days is choosing a career based on its ease. Means, they go for an easier option. Its quite possible that you might have a much greater capability, but you are settling for less. Ok fine, even if you have identified your capabilities, you should know that whether there is something more that you can do in similar field. For example, if you are interested in “WRITING”, you should determine your further specialization, like creative writing or reporting/journalism.

3. Don’t follow the herd:

Don’t go by herd mentality. Do not run after the ongoing trend to follow other people in a herd. Doing so, you may end up landing into profession you never wanted to do.  For example, a guy took International Marketing just because few of his classmates took the same subject in his masters. He could have opted for MBA with dual specialization, which could have raised his career prospects.
So, one should always think, analyze and then decide over the career decision after considering all the factors and doing proper research over things.

4. Job based on salary:

A job chosen on the basis of salary can drown you in long term. You can never do good in field that does not match your skill set and interest. It may definitely yield good money but it can never give you self-satisfaction. Money should always be a secondary thing.
5. Choosing a job because of heavy titles:
Choosing a career just because it has a heavy sounding great title, is not a wise decision. Analyze your priorities, then your capabilities and then your command over the skill. A heavy title shall also carry a great sense of responsibility and skill set you may not be even interested in but still you will choose that career because you want glory… think about it… is it worth that much?

6. Not understanding what you want in life:

Most people try to figure out their purpose in life and their dream career can be a simple and easier process while for some others it may take a lifetime.
Setting goals for your life and just believing that you will be able to fulfill them does not always work for everyone, and it is one of the Important reasons to know who you are and where you want to be in life before deciding on your dream career.
A teenager cannot be expected to know what he wants to do with the rest of his life. Our lives may take a sudden turn any time; this combined with changes in external ecosystem will bring changes in career goals from time to time.
While some of you may dream about becoming an innovator-par-excellence like Steve Jobs, a business leader like Indira Nooyi or a daredevil like Michael Schumacher, others want to be a teacher, nurse, journalist or even an entrepreneur. However, one must understand that this does not necessarily happen overnight.

7. Procrastination in choosing the right career:

I had conversations with many of my students whose age is around 25 years but if asked about their future plans regarding their careers… imagine the answer… A 25 year old saying “I AM NOT SURE” or “I DON’T KNOW”…  Deciding career will take a lot of time, so one should start thinking about it as early as age of 12years.
You cannot wait for a magic to happen overnight and you will come to know the best career for you. It takes time and effort. Let that happen. Apply effort and spare time.  Many of you might have to take Education Loan, but always keep in mind… money is hard earned, so choose the path of your education wisely.

8. Choosing a job to fulfill your parent’s dream:

Every parent wants to live their unfulfilled dreams through their children. It’s human tendency and quite common in a country like India. However, never be pressurized to do what your parents want you to do. If you feel you are interested in making a career in some other field or sector then convey this to them and they will surely understand your interests. But always be sure to understand the correct reasons why they want you to select a particular career. It can certainly be a good choice as they are quite experienced than you and would like to choose the best future for you. So, always take advices from elders and people around you but be careful before you act.

Consider talking to a career counselor if you are still too confused. A personalized report on your personality traits usually helps.
